The 3A quarterfinals were featured at the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament Tuesday afternoon and evening. Davenport Assumption’s Adam Hutchinson missed a game tying free throw with no time left on the clock as Sioux City Heelan escaped with a 58-57 win in the class 3A quarterfinals. Assumption coach Randy Norton says the one miss didn’t cost them the game as they win and lose as a team. Nathan Funk led Sioux City Heelan with 25-points. He says they’re happy to advance. He says it’s too bad Hutchinson had to miss the free throw, but he says it’s part of the game. Also in 3A, Oelwein guard Eric Sanders scored 32-points, including 16 of 18 from the foul line as Oelwein downed Humboldt 61-50.Humboldt coach Dennis Parks says despite the loss it was a great season. He says the team is disappointed, but says that will change after a day or two.Pella rallied by conference rival Grinnell for a 56-51 victory. Pierce Hibma led the Dutch with 15-points. Todd Lorensen had 28-points and made 14 of 18 free throws as PCM Monroe held off a second half rally by Sioux Center for a 78-74 victory.Sioux Center fell behind by 11-points in the opening half and coach Todd Arends says that allowed the PCM guards to take control.
