Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is announcing a plan today he says will “shore up” two major elements of our economy and our society — the health care profession and education. There are shortages of nurses and teachers across Iowa and the U-S, meaning those who are working in those professions are burning out. Harkin wants to offer a financial incentive to college students who graduate and then pursue careers in nursing and teaching.Young people who go into teaching at schools where there is a teacher shortage could have up to 17-thousand-500 dollars in student loans forgiven after five years of work. The same incentives would be offered to nurses and nurses aides.
