The Iowa Department of Agriculture is looking for family farms with longevity. Joan Kiernan is director of the “Century Farms” program which honors farms that’ve been in the same family for at least 100 years. Kiernan says the program started in 1976, and the application is relatively simple to fill out. Kiernan says the number of century farms decreased in the 1980s, but she says they’ve been on the increase recently. There were 333 new farms added last year for a total of 13-thousand-891. She says the oldest farm has been owned by the same family for over a century-and-a-half.The owners of new farms added to the list are recognized in a special ceremony. The ceremony this year is August 13th during the Iowa State Fair. The deadline to apply to be recognized as a century farm is June 1st. To get an application, call Kiernan at 515-281-5323.
