An exhibit on a famous pair of explorers has opened in Des Moines that aims to educate Iowans about Lewis and Clark — and to get them involved in today’s conservation of the Missouri River. Tom Carrels is the exhibit specialist with the group American Rivers. He says the exhibit uses the Lewis and Clark expedition to interest visitors and document the pre-development conditions of the river. The exhibit allows visitors to walk an abbreviated version of the Lewis and Clark Trail, from St. Louis to the Pacific, learning about new plants and animals the explorers discovered nearly 200 years ago. Carrels says kids can climb into a replica of the prow of the explorers’ keelboat, surrounded by a mural of the Missouri River as experienced by Lewis and Clark. He says there’s a lot of high quality photos and text in the exhibit. There’s also an 18-seat mini-theatre where short videos are shown while audio stations play voices from the past and present. The exhibit will be at Des Moines’ Merle Hay Mall through April 3rd.
