Legislators are moving ahead with a bill that’d ban human cloning. During debate on the issue just before midnight, Democrat Senator Matt McCoy of Des Moines questioned why the ban was necessary, since the U-S Senate is poised to pass a nationwide ban. McCoy says as he learns more about it, he gets more confused and is not sure what they’re trying to accomplish when the feds are going to institute a ban.Republican Senator John Redwine of Sioux City, a doctor, responded.Redwine said sometimes when Iowans feel strongly about an issue, they take the lead. He says it is appropriate to take the subject up as it’s being debated around the world. The Senate voted last night to back down from the idea of banning “destructive” medical research on human embryos, something Senators tried to do earlier this year, but were rebuffed House members.
