About the most embarrassing thing that could happen at the Iowa State Math Championships -did- happen over the weekend. The contest was held at the University of Northern Iowa where the local high school, Cedar Falls, was among the top teams trying to qualify for a regional math competition in Kansas City in May. When the Saturday number crunching was all over and the scores were posted, Iowa City’s City High won, with Cedar Falls second and Iowa City West was third. Problem was — the judges for the state math competition had made a 60-point error adding up the final tally! Students spotted the error and Iowa City West was declared the winner, then City High, with Cedar Falls third. All three of the top Iowa teams go on to the regionals anyway.
