As Iowa’s democratic Governor and republican legislators feud over the state budget, could there be a state government shut down? Lawmakers and the Governor are talking about the state budget which goes into effect July 1st. Governor Vilsack promises to veto the budget plan republican lawmakers approved last Friday, and he’s calling legislators back in special session on Monday to draft a new spending plan. What happens if nothing’s resolved by July 1st? Would state government stay open for business? When President Clinton and republican Congressional leaders were at loggerheads in 1995, Congress passed temporary “spending resolutions” which kept the federal government running. But republican legislative leaders say they can’t do that at the state level. And Legislative Fiscal Bureau director Dennis Prouty says most state government agencies would have to close up shop if there’s no budget passed.
