Proposed livestock unit the subject of another meeting tonight near Stuart

Another meeting near Stuart tonight will inform residents about a proposed hog lot. Despite protests, farmer Gary Weiss may get state permits he’ll need for a farrowing operation.It’ll be at least 5,000 head of sows and pigs born there will be shipped out. Wayne Gieselman with the D.N.R. says engineers have looked at the site proposed for the confinement, near the border between Adair and Guthrie counties. It’s a “good” site with no water tables or surface nearby, and it’s been well chosen for the purpose. Tonight’s meeting will be in a church where several public-information meetings have been held on the same issue. He says the DNR’s close to issuing permits Weiss will need, and then the county will have the right to comment for 14 days. Under state law, the only entity with a right to appeal the issue is the Board of Supervisors. Gieselman is going to tell people what the state’s role is in the hoglot-permit process, and he’ll also gather some more information.
