A near-fatal accident involving a seven-year-old boy and a steak knife prompted a warning from doctors this week. Jordan Hamilton fell on the knife and stabbed himself in the heart while clearing plates from the dinner table. Hamilton recovered from what doctors say is usually a fatal wound. Dr. Doug Selover treated Hamilton in the emergency room of Des Moines’ Mercy Hospital. He says this type of accident could happen to anyone, and it shows the need to teach knife safety. Selover says your dishwasher may seem harmless, but holds danger for kids.He had a former patient with a child who was crawling on the countertop and fell into their dishwasher and was injured on an upturned knife. Selover says other seemingly innocent things can be dangerous to young kids.He says you shouldn’t leave a butcher block with knives in it out where children may get at the knives. Selover is a pediatric E-R specialist and he sees lots of injuries that result from kids unexpectedly getting ahold of sharp objects. He recommends parents check their homes and childproof them to prevent such accidents.
