The creators of a new program at Iowa State University are counting on it to add up to more math teachers. The program was designed in response to a shortage of junior and senior high math teachers in Iowa, and nationwide. Cathy Curtis of I-S-U’s College of Education says it’s a good program from someone who’s looking for a career change. She says the program is for people who already have a degree in a math area, and it focuses on how to teach math. She says there are a lot of potential teachers out there. Curtis says those who take the class could be ready to start handing out complex story problems to students in just over a year. She says it all depends on the courses they’ve taken before, but many could be ready to teach within 15 months.
