As state leaders wrestle with Iowa’s massive deficit, the University of Iowa can’t stand the heat of budget cuts, but is still headed for the kitchen. For the moment forgetting textbooks, dozens of U-of-I professors have volunteered to haul out their cookbooks and whip up batches of brownies, cupcakes, cookies and anything else that might sell to hungry passers-by. Some faculty have organized what they’re calling the Iowa City institution’s first-ever Budget Cut Bake Sale. It’ll run this Saturday from 10 to 2 at Hubbard Park, across from the Iowa Memorial Union. All proceeds from the bake sale will be directed to the university treasurer’s office to be handed out in the form of scholarships. In this fiscal year, the U-of-I has faced three separate cuts in its state funding for a total loss of more than 38-million dollars.
