A long-buried report with budget cutting ideas for state government will be re-evaluated.The Legislature’s Oversight Committee plans to dust off the so-called “Fisher Commission” report, which was issued when Terry Branstad was Iowa’s Governor. Republican Senator Mary Lundby of Marion says Des Moines businessman David Fisher, the instigator of the report, will be called in to testify before the Committee.Lundby says the “Fisher Commission” found about a quarter of a billion dollars worth of savings. She wants to review how many were implemented, and how many ideas are still on the shelf. The Oversight Committee will also review how other states estimate tax revenue and make recommendations to get better figures.Iowa’s “Revenue Estimating Conference” has gravely under-estimated state tax revenue, and lawmakers will have to come back in special session to cut this year’s state budget and next year’s, too.
