With the suspected mailbox bomber in custody, the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food pickup day will go on today (Saturday). Food donated by Iowans is picked up by mail carriers to stock the pantries of Iowa food banks. Food Bank of Siouxland executive director Karen Kenter-Blumberg says the food collection is important.She says this is the richest country in the world, but there’s still poverty and if people aren’t fed, the poverty will continue. Kenter-Blumberg says it’s easy to participate.You can put non-perishable food items in a bag near your mailbox for mail carriers to pick up. Kenter-Blumberg says the food gathered in her area goes out to hundreds of people.In eastern Iowa, Cedar Falls postal worker Bobbie Hullerman says she hopes the food drive won’t suffer from the mail bomb scare.Hullerman says the “Stamp Out Hunger Day” involves a lot of effort for a good cause.The food pickup day is taking place across the state and nation Saturday.
