The grandson of birth-control pioneer Margaret Sanger was in Iowa this past weekend for the annual meeting of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa. Alexander Sanger says the message still needs telling.Sanger says people don’t realize birth control wasn’t legal until 1966, and abortion was legalized in 1973. Sanger says not knowing that history makes people more complacent than they should be about their reproductive rights, which could still be taken away.He notes this year’s Iowa legislature passed a bill that would have forced doctors to give woman seeking an abortion information about adoption and the father’s duty to provide child support if they decided to have the baby. The Governor vetoed the bill, however. Sanger says by the time a woman arrives at an abortion clinic, she’s thought through the situation. He says people who don’t approve of abortion shouldn’t have one, and women who want one should make that moral decision with her doctor.
