Plans are now in the works for the centerpiece of the University of Iowa to shine again. The state Board of Regents has given its final okay to the master plan for rebuilding Old Capitol in Iowa City, which was Iowa’s first capitol building. The 160-year-old landmark was heavily damaged by fire last fall that demolished the distinctive cupola and golden dome. The plans call for rebuilding the entire upper portion and belltower based on its original 1840s design. U-of-I officials say work will start this summer and should be finished by February of next year. The cost is estimated at four-and-a-half million dollars.
