There’s a lot of mud slinging going on in northwest Iowa’s Storm Lake — and it has nothing to do with politics. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has hired a dredging crew to clean out part of the lake. D-N-R Fisheries Chief, Marion Conover, says they’ll move out a lot of mud and sludge.They’re dredging out a 180-acre area of the lake to a depth of up to 12 feet. Conover says the deeper lake is helpful for the creatures living in the lake.The deeper water should make it easier on the fish and lead to less winterkill. He says it should also help the water quality of the lake.The water should be clearer as the nutrients coming into the lake should get trapped in the deeper end. Conover says is should take some time before the lake fills in again.Conover says the dredging will cost four million dollars and should be completed by the end of this year. This is a state-funded project and Conover says Storm Lake residents are also working on additional improvements to the lake.
