Three defending champions lead the way in the Radio Iowa/Baseball Coaches Association high school poll.Tonight marks the official start of the season and Granville Spalding opens a bid for a third consecutive state championship at the top of the 1A survey. The traditional powers dominate the poll as Mason City Newman is second, LeMars-Gehlen is third followed by Lansing Kee and North Iowa. Emmetsburg edged Eagle Grove in last summer’s 2A title game and they open this season one and two. Dyersville Beckman is third followed by Mid-Prairie and Council Bluffs St. Albert. Defending 3A champ Sioux City Heelan is top ranked. Cedar Rapids Xavier is second and rounding out the top five its Denison, Oelwein and Davenport Assumption. Iowa City High opens top ranked in class 4A. Marshalltown is second, Lewis Central is third, Dubuque Wahlert is fourth and defending champ West Des Moines Dowling it fifth.
