The mayor of the northeast Iowa town of Marquette is due in court today to face a trespassing charge. 40-year-old John Ries is to appear in Clayton County court to answer the charge. He’s accused of entering a garage last fall and writing profane words in the dust on the hood of the car. Ries reportedly told police he’d gone into the garage to feed and water the owner’s dog. Ries was on the Marquette city council when the alleged incident occurred and was elected mayor in November of 2001.
