City High looks for repeat in 4A track meet

The Boy’s State Track meet opens tomorrow in Des Moines, and it’s a good possibility City High of Iowa City will come away with the 4A team title again. Iowa High School Athletic Association spokesman Budd Legg says a Little Hawk win would be record setting for their coach.A win would give coach John Raffensperger 10 state titles, the most ever. Three other coaches now have nine state boy’s track titles. City High ended a string of six straight titles by Ames in 1992, and has won or tied for every title since then, except for the 1998 crown won by West Des Moines Valley. Legg says another record-breaking could come from a Fort Dodge athlete.Legg says Dan Taylor has a good chance of getting both the 32-hundred and 16-hundred meter records. Carroll’s Adam Huluska, who won three events last year and was named the meet’s outstanding performer, is back with another shot at three golds. Sprinter Calvin Davis is one reason Iowa City City High has a chance for another title, as Legg says Davis has a chance for multiple wins.Jason Nolting of Preston East Central and Cody Solverson of Fort Dodge St. Edmonds could win three events in class 2A, and Brian Waters of Marshaltown is back to defend his three titles in wheelchair events. Legg says winning multiple events isn’t easy, as the pressure, weather and other factors can make it difficult.The events, mostly preliminaries, begin Friday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The majority of the finals are scheduled for Saturday.
