A Morningside track star will wrap up her stellar career at the NCAA Division Two National Championships beginning today in San Angelo, Texas. Meredith Davis of Richfield, Minnesota finished last in the heptathlon her freshman year, fourth as a sophomore, and won the event last year. Davis says it’s a lot different coming in as the defending champ. She says the expectations make it tougher, but she says she’s a veteran and that should help her deal with the pressure. Davis also qualified second in the individual long jump and third in the 100-meter hurdles, but says they’ll take a back seat to the quest to repeat the heptathlon title. The heptathlon starts today with the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash. Friday’s events are the long jump, javelin and 800 meter run. Davis has gained All-American status 13 times while competing for the Sioux City school. She’s not sure how many hours she’s spent practicing for her events. She starts the day with an hour or hour-and-a-half of weight lifting and then she comes back for practice from two to six. Davis plans to keep competing in the heptathlon after she graduates, which she says keeps her from thinking about the end of her Morningside career. She says she’ll probably look back down the road and realize what she’s accomplished. Davis has accepted a graduate assistant track coach position at Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota, where she’ll be working on her master’s degree in sports administration.
