A new state health initiative will work toward getting Iowans off their behinds, on their feet and sweating toward better lives. Tim Lane, the state health department’s fitness consultant, says the campaign has a two-pronged approach to coax couch-loving Iowans into working off some flab.Lane says Iowans need to adopt better diets and get more physically active. Lane says the Surgeon General recommends 30-minutes of exercise five days a week. Lane says he wants to start small, urging the many inactive people in the Hawkeye State to start with doing at least five minutes of exercise a day. He says people often turn over the whole tree instead of turning over a new leaf. He says people need to start slowly and address the problem with some simple changes to start.Lane says Iowans are -quote- “incredibly overweight.” He says about 60-percent of the state’s residents could benefit by shedding at least some pounds. A recent study found the number of Iowans who consider themselves obese grew from 14 to 23-percent in the past decade.
