Ganske, Salier talk guns and taxes

The two candidates competing for the republican nomination for U-S Senate quibbled about gun rights during a joint appearance this morning. Bill Salier of Nora Springs points to the failing grades the N-R-A has given Congressman Greg Ganske. Ganske says he has a strong pro-gun voting record, and can’t remember the issues which earned him the N-R-A’s “D minus” and “F” grades. He says there are major differences between himself and Senator Harking on Second Amendment rights. Ganske says Harkin one said he wanted to take all the handguns and send them out on a barge in the ocean and sink them. Salier scoffs at Ganske’s answer. Salier says Ganske remembers why he got the failing grades from the N-R-A, he’s just trying to “spin” the issue. On another issue, Salier of Nora Springs, who’s a farmer, wants to completely get rid of the income tax, and replace it with a national sales tax.Salier says the first step is to make the income tax unconstitutional to guarantee politicians don’t try to collect both taxes in times of emergency. Greg Ganske of Des Moines, a Congressman, says it’s time for a complete overhaul of the tax system, although he’s not suggesting an alternative.Ganske says there’s no national consensus on what to replace the current system with, but he says there is agreement that the system should be simplified. Ganske and Salier will appear together on Iowa Public Television at 6:30 tonight.
