Last year’s champions in all three classes successfully defended their titles in this year’s Girls’ State Golf Tournament. Eldora-New Providence shot a 675 in the two days to best Wapello by 31 strokes to win a second-straight title in class 1A. Eldora-New Providence shaved several strokes off their first day total, something that pleased coach Ken Damon. He says the young team was just happy to make it to state, let alone putting up the second best score in history.Eldora-New Providence was led by medallist Christie Athas who shot a 147.Grinnell had to hold off a charge by Clear Lake to win a second-straight title in Class 2A by two strokes. Grinnell coach Arvilla Altemeier says her team felt it could come back after being behind after the first day. She says it was a great win.The title gives Altemeier four championships, the most in Class 2A by any school. Altemeier says she’s coached a lot of great girls and just goes along for the ride while they do the work.Cedar Rapids Washington repeated as the 3A champion by carding the lowest ever two-day total of 645. Marshalltown finished second in 3A with a 678.
