An anti-meat group is using a bunny to try and get their message across during the Annual World Pork Expo. The group “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” or PETA has sent members to try and disrupt past Pork Expos with things such as throwing a cream pie at the Pork Queen. PETA spokesman Bruce Friederich says the group’s trying a different approach this year with a billboard featuring former Playboy Playmate Kim Heffner wearing an Uncle Sam costume with the saying “I Want You to go Vegetarian.” He says Heffner has been a supporter of PETA and a vegetarian for at least 20 years. Friederich says they won’t try to protest on the grounds of the event. He says going to the place where the producers are has not “been as profitable for us” as it is going to fast food restaurants or stores to talk with people.Friederich says the group’s method has changed, but the message hasn’t. He says people who eat meat, and pork in particular, support animal cruelty. The PETA billboard’s up on a main street near downtown Des Moines. The Pork Expo is at the state fairgrounds beginning Thursday.
