University of Northern Iowa senior shortstop Travis Welsch, of Muscatine, is one of the players with Iowa connections taken in the first two days of the Major League draft. The Chicago Cubs drafted Welsch.Welsch says he’d talked to 10 other ballclubs, but is a life-long Cubs fan and is happy to be in their system. Welsch says the Cubbies will switch him to the other side of the infield to second base. He says the area scout for the Cubs says he’ll probably go to Arizona next week for training camp.He says he could land in Mesa, Arizona or Boise, Idaho — but all that matters is he’s getting a chance to play in the pros.Welsch was the third Panther to be selected up until Wednesday. He says that’s a good thing for the UNI program, as six players from the team have been drafted in the last two years.Other Panthers drafted are Josh Habel, a senior pitcher from Dubuque, and senior catcher Alex Dvorsky of Marion. Habel was drafted by the San Francisco, Giants and Dvorsky went to Anaheim.
