Former Kossuth County Sheriff under investigation for shortage of funds

An Iowa D-C-I agent says the investigation into the former Kossuth County Sheriff’s activities shows there’s a shortage of funds from sheriff’s office accounts.Kevin Van Otterloo resigned March 19, admitting in his letter of resignation that he used a county credit card for personal items. The county supervisors then asked the state auditor’s office to conduct an audit of the sheriff’s office, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is still investigating the case. The DCI’s Bob Henderson says the suspected shortages in various accounts date back to 1998, and amount to around $90,000. Kossuth County attorney Todd Holmes says he recently sent a letter to the Iowa Attorney general’s office requesting that office take over the investigation. He says the A-G’s office has appointed an assistant attorney general to the case. Holmes says no charges have been filed in the case as the investigation continues.
