A former Mason City police chief is suing his latest employer, and his time in Iowa has come under review in the courtroom. Jack Schlieper had an agreement with city leaders when he left his position as chief of Mason City police. He’d leave, and they’d give any future potential employer a standard reference form letter and not talk about a groundswell of complaints about him and his management style. But when he was fired after just two years in Wichita Falls, Texas, Schlieper sued, saying he was sacked for speaking out against discrimination. Texas and Iowa police officials have testified, in the 20-days of the trial so far, that Schlieper screamed at his secretary, used threats and abusive language, and offered to fire people who disagreed with him. Wichita Falls city officials say they think Mason City misled them by letting them think they were hiring a good cop. Schlieper’s suing his former Texas employers for two million dollars.
