A half-dozen people gathered on the statehouse steps today to decry the plan to store the nation’s nuclear waste in Nevada’s Yucca Mountain. John Hatter of Nevada is part of a group called Citizen Alert, which not only opposes the Yucca Mountain site, but the trucking of nuclear waste in huge casks.Hatter says an accident’s bound to happen with the nuclear waste shipments.Nick Getzen of the Iowa Public Interest Research Group says radioactive nuclear waste should not be shipped via the interstates or railroads.Iowa’s Governor, though, says Iowans shouldn’t be too worried about having nuclear waste shipped through the state. Vilsack says having a national nuclear waste depository is preferable to having waste stored at nuclear power plants, like the one in Palo. The U-S Senate will soon vote on the creation of the national nuclear waste depository. The House has already approved the deal.
