Those who try to make some green by moving Marlboro reds could face the smuggler’s blues.Some new warning signs are in place for drivers heading into Illinois from eastern Iowa. The Illinois Department of Revenue is warning motorists against bootlegging Iowa cigarettes in Illinois. But Illinois officials claim the new 40-cent per pack state tax on cigarettes is not the reason for the signs. They say similar signs were in place years ago but never were replaced when they deteriorated. The new signs warn that people smuggling untaxed cigarettes into Illinois are subject to prison time, fines of up to $25,000 and vehicle seizure. There’s also a number to call to report smugglers.
