The Governor’s appointed a 16-member commission to pick five designs for the state quarter that’ll be struck by the U-S Mint. State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald is the panel’s co-chair. He says there are a lot of people who want to have a say in what goes on the quarter.Fitzgerald says the group will submit its recommendations to the Governor by August 25th, then the Governor will send those five to the Mint for its o-k. Then, Governor Vilsack will choose the winner, probably in December.Fitzgerald says veterans groups are pushing to have the state quarter honor the Five Sullivans, the Waterloo, Iowa brothers who perished when their Navy ship was sunk in World War II. He says that’s the idea he’s heard the most about. Fitzgerald says the mint doesn’t want any individual person on the quarter, but he thinks the Sullivans represent more than one person.Iowans have had big debates about things like the state motto and the state’s license plates. Fitzgerald is prepared for emotions over the quarter design to run high. He says he hopes the issue doesn’t take on a life of its own, so the state can put forth its best image. Two “numismatics” — coin collectors — are on the task force, as are teachers, an artist and folks from other walks of life.
