The state quarter committee met today. Military veterans, coin collectors, a retired postmaster and a fourth-grade teacher — the volunteer committee’s a real cross-section, though none of the Iowans ever designed money before. Iowa’s got two months to send in up to five ideas to the United States mint, for its entry in the series of 25-cent pieces representing each state. The members got a long list of rules — no portraits of a living person, no state flag or seal, nothing “frivolous or inappropriate.” People have already started sending in ideas from a country courthouse to American Gothic. It must be timeless — once the mint adds Iowa’s coins to the state quarters in circulation, they’ll last an estimated 30 years.
