A Texas company has reached an agreement to mine the biotech benefits from Iowa’s corn. Daniel Winegarden is president of the Iowa Agricultural Finance Corporation, which is helping fund the Iowa investment of a company called Prodigene. He says Prodigene is the leading company in the world in commercializing the biofarming products from corn, such as industrial enzymes and beneficial proteins that’re used in pharmaceuticals. Winegarden says “bio-farming” is one of the key industries state leaders are trying to build in Iowa.Biofarming is growing plants to derive beneficial products from them just as refiners derive products from oil. The Iowa Agricultural Finance Corporation is investing one-point-five million dollars in the company. Winegarden says the company has agreed to use Iowa corn in its work. The company has agreed to grow at least 25-percent of their corn in Iowa through 2010.
