The grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, but Iowa’s fences contain some 200 types of grass. Iowa State University botany professor Lynn Clark is working to identify all of them and create a website devoted to Iowa’s many grasses.Before Iowa was settled by Europeans, Clark says 70-percent of the state was covered in native prairie and tall grasses. Now, she says only about one-tenth of one-percent of Iowa is grassland, but many people are striving to bring the native grasses back.Clark says there -is- a demand for information about the 200-some species of grass that grow in Iowa.Clark hopes to have the website ready for farmers, horticulturists and gardeners by the end of this year.
