A committee hoping to come up with a “scoring system” for proposed livestock confinements will meet this week. It’s the second meeting for the group, which is charged with developing a way to evaluate if a specific location’s suitable for large livestock confinements. The goal’s to come up with a checklist, a collection of criteria that can be verified and “scored” by the DNR and county boards of supervisors. The first day of the meeting will begin with presentations by U of Iowa and ISU specialists on manure handling, water quality, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and other topics. The checklist is to be in use by next March and the committee faces a September deadline to come up with a draft.
