Severe thunderstorms raced across central and southern Iowa this morning behind heavy winds. One report clocked the winds at 96 miles-an-hour in the Carroll County town of Glidden, where Cindy Kerkhoff is the mayor.Kerkhoff says she believes the wind was moving that quickly as there isn’t anyone in town with trees that weren’t damaged. Kerkhoff says it wasn’t a case of watching the storm bend the trees over, as it was raining so hard, you couldn’t see anything. Kerkhoff says they got around two inches of rain, and lost electricity for around three hours, but overall there wasn’t much damage beyond the downed tree limbs. She noticed the corn east of town was knocked flat, but says they were fortunate to not have more damage. Kerkhoff says many people are out around the town this afternoon cleaning up the downed branches.Glidden, which is just east of Carroll, has a population of 12-hundred.
