A man killed in a crash southeast of Waterloo yesterday was the suspect in an Illinois slaying.Authorities say John Scherer was killed in the crash after his S-U-V crossed the center line on Highway 218 and hit a semi head-on. It happened about three miles south of LaPorte City, just inside the Benton County line. The driver of the semi was not hurt. Scherer’s six-year-old daughter Rachel was airlifted to a Waterloo hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Police in Naperville, a Chicago suburb, had wanted to question Scherer after officers found his ex-wife Sheri Scherer dead in the bedroom of her home there.
