The democrat running for the western Iowa Congressional seat opposes the big changes in the federal tax system his republican opponent supports. Republican Steve King would get rid of the national income tax and replace it with a nationwide sales tax. Democrat Paul Shomshor says that’d be terrible. Shomshor says senior citizens living on Social Security would have to pay the 15 percent sales tax on everything they buy, and farmers who buy expensive equipment, like a combine, would have to pay sales tax on the purchase. Shomshor says a national sales tax would harm mainstreet businesses. Shomshor is a certified public accountant from Council Bluffs.
