A Cedar Falls student has added to his already impressive list of academic accomplishments. Alex Power graduated from Cedar Falls High School and plans to begin classes at Iowa State University this fall. He’ll enter I-S-U with a 10-thousand dollar scholarship he’s won from the Davidson Institute for Talent Development for a math project. All that doesn’t seem out of the ordinary until you check his i-d and see that he’s only 16 years old. Power skipped the third and 7th grades to move up his high school graduation. The project that won him the scholarship involved graphing of numbers and colors. Power says the project could have some everyday applications, as there’s a project to program a mobile robot that could use his program, it could also be used for communications networks and the expansion of the Internet. While it’s a prestigious award, the money is a bonus to go along with the full-ride scholarship he’s already won. Power says he’ll probably use the money for his graduate work. He plans to enroll as math major with a possible second major of chemistry or physics. Power isn’t worried about being the youngest kid on campus.He says he’s gotten used to taking classes with older students and entering college a couple of years early shouldn’t be a problem. He’s already taken some classes at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Power eventually hopes to become a university professor.
