A man who was involved in an armed standoff with Des Moines police surrendered peacefully this morning. At about one o’clock this morning, a woman called police and said her boyfriend had just talked to her on the phone and said he was going to commit suicide. When cops arrived at the man’s home near the state fairgrounds, he fired a shotgun in their direction. Neighboring homes were evacuated, the power company turned off the juice to the man’s home, and police set up a special phone line to try to negotiate with him. After seven hours, the man surrendered to police, saying he had just taken some pills. He was taken to a hospital for observation.
