After weeks of dry weather, southwest Iowans saw a torrent of water this morning as thunderstorms dumped hail, too, in some places. Wind damage was reported in Sidney, where power lines and tree limbs were knocked down. Andy Loewe and his family, who live near Sidney, got a rude awakening. An 80-foot-tall tree fell onto the family’s house shortly after five this morning, and windows in the home were blown out. Loewe’s wife dashed into the nursery, where their 17-month-old son, Carson, was sleeping.Loewe says the tree came within a few feet of the nursery, and his son was safe but screaming in his bed, surrounded by shattered glass. Hail was reported near Council Bluffs, Tabor and Coin. Tree and wind damage was reported in the Farragut area, too.
