One of Iowa’s top tourist attractions takes off today in Indianola.About a hundred hot air balloons will fill the skies over the Warren County town for the next eight days — and nights. Gerald Knoll, executive director of the National Balloon Classic says one popular event is called a “night glow” where balloons are kept tethered to the ground and illuminated by the burners.Other events include a fishing tournament, a bike ride, an arts and crafts show, live music and fireworks. Also balloon rides are being offered for about 150-dollars per person. Knoll says many balloons are in shapes other than the traditional teardrop.Unusual balloons this year include: a red apple, a champagne bottle, a dinosaur, a Cheshire cat, a panda bear and the infamous “Purple People Eater.” The classic runs through August 10th.
