Wallace quietly leads Cyclones amid Heisman hype

Iowa State University quarterback Seneca Wallace is being touted as a Heisman Trophy candidate this season, but you won’t catch the senior from Sacramento, California pushing his own case. Wallace’s biggest show of emotion comes when talking about the upcoming season. He says everyone is excited about the opportunity to play against the best teams in the country, including the opener against Florida State. The low-key q-b has a quiet confidence he says was built with last season’s success as a first-time starter for ISU. He says he now knows he can play in the Big 12, but says he has to stay focused on what’s ahead.Cyclone coach Dan McCarney says the team will throw more this season — something that would have most signal callers drooling — but not Wallace. He says hopefully if the time comes to throw the ball, they’ll take advantage of it. Promotional efforts by ISU included superimposing a picture of Wallace on the head of the Sphinx. Wallace says that brought a small chuckle, but he says he’s mostly ignored the hype. He says he hasn’t had much to do with all the hype and he’s just looking forward to playing football.He says his teammates haven’t razzed him much about the Sphinx photo. Wallace says they’ve been “really respectful” and haven’t said much about it.Seneca will lead the Cyclones in their season opener August 24th against Florida State in Kansas City.
