Some Iowans are getting calls from telemarketers who claim they’re raising money for their local police department. Grinnell Police Captain Tim Sittig says as far as he can tell, the calls are legitimate, with a catch. It’s not for the Grinnell Police Department. It’s a national agency that’s contracted with telemarketers to solicit funds on behalf of law enforcement officers across the country. Captain Sittig says if you want to contribute, ask the telemarketer a lot of questions. Get the address and ask to send a check — don’t give a credit card number over the phone. Sittig says unless the telemarketer gets pushy, you likely don’t have anything to worry about — just proceed with caution.
