Greving ready to take ball and run for Hawkeyes

A kid from Ames is ironically the top running back in Iowa City as the Hawkeyes prepare for the upcoming football season. Aaron Greving is the top tailback on the depth chart in the effort to replace leading rusher Ladell Betts. Greving, a junior, showed he’s ready by stepping in when Betts got injured and rushing for 115 yards in Iowa’s Alamo Bowl win. He says the game gave momentum to the team and also gave him a confidence boost, and the coaches confidence he can be productive. The former Ames High School standout says Betts was a great role model.While he learned a lot from Betts, Greving won’t be borrowing any of his moves. His running style is pretty basic, straight ahead without a lot of moves.When it comes to leading the team, Greving will let his action on the field set the example. He says he’s not big on yelling or talking a lot to his teammates.Carl Jackson, the assistant coach in charge of running backs, says he has confidence in all three of his tailbacks.He believes the program is to the point where the new guys can step up and play. Junior Fred Russell and sophomore Jermell Lewis are in the two and three spots behind Greving at tailback. Jackson says the biggest adjustment to being a full-time starter is getting used to the weekly grind. Jackson says the running backs know they have big shoes to fill, but he says they have the right attitude, as they all want the ball and a chance to run.Iowa opens their season August 31st against Akron.
