Most members of a northwest Iowa-based Army Reserve unit are scheduled to return home today after nearly a year on active duty following the terrorist attacks of nine-eleven. Sergeant First Class Christopher Larsen, a Reserve public affairs spokesman, says members of the 42-49th Military Police Company are flying into Des Moines in several planes today. They were one of the nation’s first Army Reserve units called to active duty after September 11th. Sergeant Larson says the M-Ps are based in Pocahontas. Since last fall, they’ve been serving in North Carolina and Texas. They’re a port security unit which means they provide security for shipping ports, ocean ports, airports and the like. Larsen says only 42 members of the company are returning today, while the rest are staying on to continue serving in North Carolina. Twenty-one of the soldiers volunteered to stay on active duty, for another year, likely. A welcome home event is planned in Pocahontas on Monday.
