Historic Highway celebrated in Story County

It’s not often an old road gets a party, but the Story County town of Nevada is celebrating Lincoln Highway Days this weekend. Marge Toot, the parade chairperson, says people who attend the bash will have plenty of fun — and learn a lot about the highway’s history. It’s the nation’s first transcontinental highway and it was originally built to transport arms from one end of the country to the other. Toot says the line-up of events includes rodeos, dances, arts and crafts, a carnival, a hot rod tractor pull, and a parade through Nevada on “old highway 30” this morning. The original Lincoln Highway stretched from New York to San Francisco. Toot says her area has a rare, long piece of that road. This is the 19th annual Lincoln Highway Days in Nevada, an event that started with the re-opening of the road after it was closed for the construction of a railroad overpass.
