The Iowa State Cyclones prepare for Saturday’s Big-12 opener against Kansas after a near upset of third-ranked Florida State. Seneca Wallace was tackledat the one yard line on the game’s final play as the Cyclones fell 38-31. Iowa State coach Dan McCarney says his team needs to put that game behind them.McCarney says he has great respect for the coaching staff at Kansas, and hopefully the Cyclones can pick up where they left off in the second half of Saturday’s game. McCarney says Hiawatha Rutland has moved back into the starting spot at running back, ahead of Michael Wagner.McCarney says Rutland was the better back Saturday night, with some good gains and real physical play. McCarney says having a conference game this week should prevent a letdown, as they know they have to come right back immediately.McCarney says his team learned some good lessons in Kansas City. This will be the debut for new Kansas coach Mark Mangino.Mangino says turning a struggling program around begins with changing the mindset of the program, from the players to the secretaries, and the janitors.Mangino would rather not start the season with a conference game, but he says the schedule was made before he was hired. Mangino says Iowa State will be a “formidable opponent.”
