The Iowa Hawkeyes open the season at home on Saturday against Akron. This will be one of two games the Hawkeyes play against Mid-American Conference teams. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says it’s a double-edged sword as everyone expects you to win, but he says the MAC has proven they have good teams and have beaten teams from the “major” conferences. Former Iowa defensive back Benny Sapp transferred to Northern Iowa after being kicked off the squad by Ferentz earlier this month. Ferentz says he discussed Sapp with Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley. He says he also talked to other coaches who were interested in Sapp. Ferentz says Sapp is a good person that made some bad choices. He says a player looking to get attention around Iowa, they just have to leave the team and the attention is unbelievable. Ferentz says that’s a little commentary from him on the coverage of the Sapp situation.Ferentz says he wishes Sapp good luck in Cedar Falls. He says he’s encouraged Sapp to take this as a fresh opportunity.
