The state’s Traffic Safety Bureau is holding its sixth special enforcement operation. The effort, called a “Special Traffic Enforcement Program” or STEP, puts extra emphasis on spotting traffic violations on Iowa roadways. Michael Laski is the director of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. He says state, county and local law officers are participating in the program that runs through September 2nd. It’s tied in with the traditional annual effort by the State Patrol to reduce accidents during Labor Day. Laski says motorists can make a difference by getting back to the very basics of safe driving.Officers wrote nearly seven thousand tickets for traffic violations during the last STEP operation during the Fourth of July. Laski says the effort is paying off when it comes to drunk drivers.He says Iowa has the second lowest alcohol fatality rate in the nation. Four people died in traffic accidents during last year’s Labor Day holiday.
