State tourism officials are predicting the number of people traveling Iowan roadways this weekend will be up. The Iowa Highway Patrol knows for sure there’ll be an increase in the number of troopers on the road. Iowa highway patrol spokesman Sergeant Robert Hansen says they’ll have 90 additional officers on the highways through a program paid for by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Hansen says it’s the last CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) of the summer driving season. He says they’ve been trying to use their resources in the best possible way during the holidays. He says they’ve been targeting specific problem areas of the state and believe it’s paid off. Hansen says there’re still drivers out there who make the roads unsafe for others. Hansen says they drive too fast and don’t pay attention to traffic signs and laws. Alcohol use by drivers remains a top concern: 4 people were killed during the Labor Day Holiday last year; one fatality involved a drunken driver.
